The journey of a new rug begins

This rug has been brewing for about a year now.....actually there will be 5 panels that will go across our dining room wall.

These have been drawn by my husband, Kenny. It's so nice to have a man who is involved with what you love to do.

For those of you who have visited my blog for a while know....Kenny is as obsessed with gardening as I am with rug hooking.

We're collaborating on this project.....he is the artist and I'm the hooker.

I'll keep you up to date as this project progresses....sharing how I make color choices and I also intend to share recipes that I come up with along the way.

I hope you'll join me on this journey.

Here is what I'm working on today. The rug has a representation of the mullen's actually a weed, but a weed that Kenny is in love has really soft leaves and beautiful yellow flowers when it I'm going to be working on coming up with some colors to use in the mullen leaves.

I've picked a leaf off of the mullen and then went through my swatch books to pull a few colors that I think might work.....I've pulled Pro Chem "olive drab" and "grasshopper" to work with, but may add other wools that I already have to the mix.

Go forth and be creative,

  1. ohhhhhh, Tammy. I can see already how beautiful that is going to be. You are rockin!

  2. Wow, what a rug this will be! I thought that was a weed, but it looks good in your yard. My hubby pulls them right out, ha,ha!

  3. Those are great dye cards you have - I've got green eye ;-) Did you make them yourself or buy them?

  4. Some of my favorite perennials are weeds! I can hardly wait until you post pictures of the completed project.

  5. Hey Tammy!

Not a weed...considered a medicinal herb! Was dried and smoked for lung conditions years ago. You can curently buy in a capsule form for asthma and other respiratory conditions, is an expectorant....and a member of the snapdragon family...I'm with Kenny! I think that they are beautiful in bloom!!!! And will make an awesome rug! Can't wait to see the finished project!!!

    Love and light,

  6. Tammy - what an exciting project you and Kenny have started! It's so wonderful that you can both coroborate (sp) on these rugs! I have a friend who's husband draws ALL her rug designs - I'm so envious! Can't wait to watch it progress.....

  7. Tammy You are lucky to have Kenny. My husband fishes, I hook period! He's a really talented artist but Not interested in drawing hooking patterns!
And I bought the swatches from Pro Chem when I bought my starter kit. Sure glad I did. It will be really helpful.
Can't wait to follow along on your progress on FIVE rugs!! WOW! You're not messin'around are you?

  8. Great project you two are sharing! Looking forward to watching the progression!

  9. Wonderful stuff! I can't wait to see it :)

  10. What an ambitious project!! This is going to be fascinating to watch, Tammy, and I hope you'll update us regularly, kind of like what Sunnie does when she's working on one of her rugs.

Love the drawning that Kenny's done for you. And how great it is that he's involved in what you love to do. Now THAT'S a great marriage!

What you've shown has a tropical feeling to it, at least to me. Is that what the 5 panels will be?
